Find your voice and sing!

There is no more uplifting way to celebrate the end of a semester than with the joyous outpouring of voices raised in song. And the Senior School House Sing event achieved just that. A high-energy, deeply collaborative, and — simply put — fun way for students and staff to come together and perform not only for House glory but also for the coveted golden microphone on the House Sing Trophy. Better yet, it’s the first time we have welcomed our Year 6 students to join their future Senior School House and teachers. Congratulations to Deakin House, who won the House Sing with their rendition of You're the One That I Want from the movie Grease!

Singing, of course, is so much more than fun. Read any number of articles or posts and you’ll discover it’s a great way to relieve stress, develop a sense of belonging and connection, and improve mental health and mood. All the endorphins we release when we have a warble really do pay off when it comes to feeling good. But we should also consider that there are physical advantages to singing we really should embrace. There’s evidence to suggest singing can boost your immune system, increase your pain threshold, develop your lung function, and assist in refining your speaking abilities. I can’t find a disadvantage in that!

So, as you embrace some well-earned rest and relaxation time over the holiday period, I encourage you all to find ways to incorporate singing into your life. Healthline recommend the following ways to warm yourselves up:

  • Take a meandering drive — just you, the road, and the radio.
  • Jump in the shower, where the acoustics are superior, and sing all your favourite tunes.
  • Sing with your kids. You’ll make memories you can all cherish.
  • Try a music festival. Some offer group sing-alongs as part of the event schedule.
  • Look for a local chorus, choir, or song circle and find out when you can join.
  • If you want to sing more confidently before you join a group, book a lesson or two with a singing teacher.
  • For free singing lessons, check out the many coaching sessions on YouTube.
