Pastoral care

Pastoral care builds and supports the Canberra Girls Grammar School (CGGS) community. We focus on the whole person through a combination of practical activities to build personal relationships, where students can be both healthy and happy. Our practical and focused approach to Pastoral Care is its strength.

Our Pastoral Care program at the School is based on the House system where everyone works together to create and maintain a caring and positive environment to encourage resourcefulness and resilience in the students, as well as a sense of social justice. Within this environment, students are able to develop self-esteem and confidence and grow as individuals.

On entry to the School, each student becomes a member of a House which reinforces a sense of belonging to our community.

Junior School

Pastoral care and wellbeing are vital to learning and teaching in the PYP and are embodied in the IB learner profile, which represents the qualities of internationally-minded students and effective lifelong learners.

The development of a student’s wellbeing can be implicitly and explicitly addressed through all areas of the PYP curriculum. Therefore, every teacher has a responsibility to support each student’s personal, social and physical development through all learning engagements both within and outside the programme of inquiry.

Senior School

The Pastoral Care program is designed to support the social and emotional development of our students and complement their academic pursuits. The program is specifically tailored to the needs of adolescent girls are they progress through senior school, and are framed by our Signature Programs. We work in partnership with parents to support students' academic, social and emotional growth, to allow our students to grow into independent and world-ready young women.

Throughout the year, each student takes part in evidence-based, age-appropriate pastoral care programs specifically designed to meet the needs of adolescent girls. This program is supported by the Heads of House, school psychologists, our Chaplain and expert guest speakers. The pastoral program builds on the themes which run through the academic program to immerse the girls in personal growth. These themes are also embedded within our School Chapel, camps and service opportunities.
